Abstract/Executive Summary

YouTube has even been a popular video streaming site while students are in distance learning. Distance learning is a new way of delivering quality and safe education in the Philippine context. However, many students still struggle in this kind of learning setup. SHS students can use YouTube as an alternative medium to gain educational videos without limitations innovatively. Despite this, studies conducted in DepEd Rizal regarding the importance of YouTube in distance learning are scant. This current study aims to qualitatively discover the significance of YouTube among SHS students in times of pandemic. Fifty senior high school students from different schools in the Division of Rizal were purposively and conveniently selected to answer online survey questionnaires via Google forms to acquire varied experiences from SHS students. The responses gathered were analyzed (Braun & Clarke, 2006) to see how students perceived using YouTube as an alternative language learning tool and how YouTube can help students improve their language skills throughout the pandemic. The findings revealed four emerging themes, namely: enhancing speaking and vocabulary skills, providing much information, supporting students’ academic performance, and lastly, improving self-confidence. The results show that YouTube has shown to be a great alternative source of information, and students can learn something they need to know despite the absence of teachers. Practical implications to teachers of English can be drawn from the study.
