Abstract

Over the years, there has been a growing interest among researchers in the complete system of consumer demand equations. The accelerated growth of the theory, as well as in applications can be attributed to a number of factors. Foremost among these is the increasing awareness among economists and fiscal planners of the importance of the analysis of consumer demand, particularly Personal Consumption Expenditure which accounts for the greatest portion of the Gross Domestic Product of most economies. The other contributory factors to the rapid growth of the theory are the following: (1) the availability in recent years of highly efficient estimation techniques that can implement non-linear and/or constrained demand systems; (2) the emergence of more powerful computational devices; and (3) the significant improvement in the data collection efforts in many countries which resulted in the widespread availability of up-todate and reliable data bases on national accounts and other economic and demographic variables.
