Abstract

Over the past 25 years, the Product Life Cycle (PLC) concept has been increasingly used by business firms in Western countries. The concept has been used extensively in the academe as a framework for product management, strategic planning, cost and financial aspects, retailing, purchasing, and international trade, as well as for linking manufacturing to marketing. Its use as a model for forecasting has also been explored. This proliferation has proceeded in spite of inconclusive evidence in support of the model and considerable doubt about its validity. Several authors have severely criticized the model, and these charges have not been fully addressed and answered. The controversy involves problems associated with the theoretical, practical, specification, and empirical aspects of the PLC.
