Abstract
THIS ARTICLE is based on a research project completed and submitted to the Research Center of the De La Salle University in 1986. Consolidation and mergers in the Philippines during the five-year period from 1980 to 1984 were effected primarily for external growth - horizontal, vertical or conglomerate. Fifty per cent of the companies that merged/consolidated were affiliated prior to the business combination. Seven out of twelve companies applied for increases in total capitalization. Among the advantages mentioned were streamlining of operations (which resulted in bigger profits), a larger share of the market, better forward planning, and enhancing the borrowing capacity of the surviving company.
