Abstract
This essay probes the concept and paradox enmeshed in “liwanag” (light) and “dilim” (dark) in Philippine cultural imagination. Here, I look into the various sources like epics, pasyon, revolutionary materials, and horror films to trace how the elements of “liwanag” and “dilim” have evolved. I examine six episodes from the horror film series Shake, Rattle, and Roll, which blatantly exhibit “liwanag” and “dilim” in their lighting and narrative. Such analyses could result in a more nuanced articulation and understanding of what seem to be contending and yet related concepts and paradoxes of “liwanag” and “dilim.”
