Abstract

This research is a tracer study of the Master in Public Administration graduates of Notre Dame of Dadiangas University (NDDU), General Santos City from 1998 to 2008.
There were 77 respondents in this study. The data were gathered through the questionnaires administered to the graduate-respondents and their immediate heads and co-employees. Data gathered were analyzed through frequency, percentage, ranking, mean and t-test.
The study revealed that upon graduation, the mean age of the graduaterespondents was 38.13 and the median age was 39. Seven (7) respondents or 30.43 percent belong to the age range between 30-33, and also 7 respondents belong to the age range from 41 to 45 years old. There were 12 graduate-respondents (52.17%) who are male, and 11 respondents (47.83%) are female; only two respondents (8.70%) were single and 21 respondents (91.30%) were married.
There were six (6) respondents or 26.09 percent who have finished engineering degrees before they take their MPA degree; four (4) respondents have finished Bachelor of Arts; four (4) respondents have finished the Accountancy degree; and the rest of the respondents were distributed to different degrees. Most of the graduate-respondents have passed the civil service professional examination, civil service sub-professional examination, engineering board examination and teachers’ board examination.
Professional development and career advancement are the top two reasons for taking the MPA degree. The quality of education offered by the University, the credibility or good record of the University, and the accessibility of the University are the top three reasons of the graduate-respondents for taking their degree at NDDU. Seven (7) or 36.84 percent of the researches conducted by the graduate-respondents in the thesis program were on Benchmarking Effective and Accountable Governance and six (6) researches or 31.58 percent were conducted under Capability Building category.
Two (2) respondents or 8.70 percent have earned a doctoral degree, and three (3) or 13.04 percent have earned doctoral units. There were 12 respondents or 52.17 percent who have attended at least one to three employment-related trainings after finishing the MPA degree. Most of the graduate-respondents are members of the professional organizations, religious organizations, and civic organizations and majority of them (16 or 69.57%) are handling administrative positions in their present employment.
The study further revealed that a high percentage of respondents are involved in community extension services, and majority (15 respondents or 65.21 percent) have no involvement in research activities.
The superiors and the co-employees of the graduate-respondents perceived that the latter manifest the knowledge and skills in public administration at a very high extent. There is no significant difference in the perceptions of the superiors and the co-employees of the graduate-respondents on the extent to which the latter manifest the knowledge and skills in public administration.
The foregoing findings served as bases in the formulation of the conclusions and recommendations of the study
