Abstract

As intriguing as it is interesting minority immigrant Muslim Maranao merchants, bearing all social labels as discriminated, marginalized socio-economic groups, epitomize successful entrepreneurs in a Christian-dominated (and often hostile and limiting business environment) metropolis of Manila. Oftentimes, there is a universal notion by the dominant population that religion-ethnic minorities therein cannot contribute to outstanding achievement both in the economic and political spheres. This paper aims to identify the factors, particularly the social context within the institutional framework underlying the Maranaos’ decision to become entrepreneurs. It touches on their personal and socio-demographic profiles including displacement experiences and aspirations. The qualitative aspect of the research design relied on the Case Study Method employing multimethods i.e. interactive data-gathering and content analysis applied to all types of primary and secondary sources with occasional cross-validation of these sources.

The most crucial part in the methodology was trust-building and confidentiality on the identity of the subjects and the processing of sensitive data, without compromising objectivity in the presentation and analysis of data.
