Abstract
This paper examines the role of the middle classes in the process of democratic transition and consolidation in the Philippines, particularly in the light of the Asian crisis and upheaval leading to the ouster of President Estrada. It also analyzes the ideas and attitudes of middle classes in the Philippine on a set of related themes about society and politics as seen from the results of a survey conducted in Metro Manila in 1997 at the onset of the Asian crisis.
