Abstract

A consierable number of studies have been done on hedging devices found in research journals, publications and news writing. However, not much has been done with regard to hedging devices in opinion columns on newspapers. This paper analyzed 30 opinion columns written by 15 male columnists and 15 female columnists from the Philippines' four major broadsheets namely, Philippine Daily Inquirer, Philippine Star, Manila Bulletin and Malaya. The analysis was done by the researcher and one interrater. Each opinion column was analyzed to determine the type of hedging device/s used based on the taxonomy of hedging devices proposed by Salager-Meyer (1997). This paper also analyzed which gender used more hedging devices in their opinion columns.
