Abstract

Layunin ng pag-aaral na makapag-ambag sa pagpapaunlad ng diskurso hinggil sa mga single, matatanda, at retiradong manggagawa sa pamamagitan ng paglalarawan sa naratibo ng mga matatandang dalagang guro na nagretiro mula sa mga pang-estadong unibersidad. Inilarawan sa artikulo kung paano nagbago ang buhay ng mga matatandang dalagang guro matapos ang kanilang pagreretiro, maging ang mga dahilan, karanasan, at pananaw nila bilang isang single, at hanggang sa mga isyu at hamon na nararanasan nila sa kasalukuyan. Sa pamamagitan ng katutubong pamamaraan na pakikipagkuwentuhan ay natuklasan ng mga mananaliksik ang sumusunod: 1) Mula sa abalang-abalang buhay noong nagtuturo pa sa pamantasan ay nagkaroon ng oras ngayon ang mga retiradong guro sa pamilya, sa mga gawaing pantahanan, pampamayanan, pansimbahan, bagama’t karamihan sa kanila ay mga part-time teachers pa rin upang hindi ganap na mawalay sa propesyon; 2) Matagal nilang hinintay ang pagreretiro subalit nalimitahan ang kanilang mga plano dahil sa pagdating ng pandemya; 3) Nagkaroon sila noon ng pagkakataon upang makapag-asawa subalit pinili nilang maging single at mas tumutok sa mga personal, propesyonal, at pampamilyang plano sa buhay; 4) Masaya at kontento sila sa kanilang buhay at nakikita nilang buo at hindi kulang ang kanilang pagkatao dahil lang wala silang asawa; 5) Kalusugan ang pangunahing inaalala nila higit lalo’t bulnerable sa kumakalat ngayong virus ang mga matatanda; at, 6) Napaghandaan ng mga guro ang kanilang pagreretiro higit lalo sa usaping pinansiyal at nakikita nilang produktibo at kapaki-pakinabang pa rin ang kanilang buhay sa kabila ng pagiging matanda at retirado. Mahalaga ang papel sapagkat maliban sa inilalarawan nito ang karanasan ng mga senior citizen at retired university teachers sa panahon ng pandemya, binabasag din nito ang mga dominanteng nosyon o iba’t ibang mito hinggil sa pagiging isang single, matanda, at retirado.

The article describes how the lives of the old single teachers changed upon retiring from their respective universities—leading to their reasons, experiences, and perspectives on being single, as well as the issues and challenges they currently experience. By using the indigenous methodological approach of informal conversation (pakikipagkuwentuhan), the researchers discovered the following: 1) From the bustling life of their years of teaching in the university, the retired teachers are now able to spend time with their family, do household chores, and participate in community and church activities. However, most of them are still part-time teachers so that they will not be fully withdrawn from their profession; 2) They have long been waiting for their retirement but their plans have been restricted due to the pandemic; 3) They have had an opportunity to get married before but they chose to stay single and focus on their personal, professional, and familial plans in life; 4) They are happy and satisfied with their lives and believe that they are not less of a being for not having a spouse; 5) Their health is what concerns them the most, especially that old people are vulnerable to the contagious virus; and 6) The teachers were prepared for their retirement, most especially in the financial aspect and they still see their lives as productive and valuable despite being old and retired. This research is vital because it enriches the limited discourse on single, retired, and older workers and documents the experiences of senior citizens and retired university teachers amidst the pandemic. It also breaks the dominant notion and popular myths regarding singlehood, old age, and retirement.
