Abstract

Isoniazid is one of the effective components of a set of drugs used to treat tuberculosis. Recently, however, it was found that some bacterial strains of tuberculosis have showed resistance against it. Research studies are now being carried out to modify the isoniazid drug to make it more effective against resistant strains of the bacteria by incorporating it as pharmacophore in different molecules. One promising type of derivative is Isonicotinoylhydrazone. A recent study has shown that these compounds have inhibitory effects against Mycobacterium tuberculosis. In this study, Isonicotinoylhydrazone derivatives of aspirin (1 -4) will be synthesized. Aspirin with varying aldehyde and/or ketone chains attached to the para position relative to the ester group will be prepared as precursors. These compounds will be coupled with isoniazid to obtain the desired hydrazone derivatives. These derivatives will be subjected to inhibitory tests against A-virulent Mycobacterium strains.
