Abstract

The Alternative Leaming System Accreditation and Equivalency (ALS A&E) Program caters to persons with disability, school drop-outs, senior citizen, jobless adults, rebel returnees, and indigenous people. It is a program under the Department of Education- Bureau of Alternative Leaming System (DepEd-BALS) which provides a parallel learning system and a viable alternative to the existing formal education instruction. In the De La Salle University, the Alternative Leaming System Accreditation and Equivalency (DLSU-ALS A&E) Program was initiated in year 2011 by the Center for Social Concern and Action (COSCA), the social development arm of the University. It is a non-formal education program for disadvantaged out-of-school youth living within the vicinity of the De La Salle University (DLSU). The purpose of this research study is to describe the profile of the DLSU-ALS passers and non-passers, their school experiences, and perception on the ALS program. The results serve as the basis for the formulation of the general recommendations to address the DLSU-ALS current situation. Using descriptive qualitative method, the responses to the survey questionnaire of the DepEd ALS A&E twelve (12) passers and nine (9) non-passers were segregated and analyzed. Based on the actual result of the 2015 DepEd A&E Test, the DLSU-ALS learners need to improve their academic performance in the learning strands pertaining to "Sustainable Use of Resources and Productivity." This part measures the ability of the learners to earn a living as an employed or self-employed person. As general recommendations, the DLSU-ALS students have recommended that more exercises in Math and Essay be given, continue the current practice of giving handouts, additional simplified lesson handouts to help the learners understand more the difficult lessons. Lastly, the recommendation for college scholarship was also emphasized.
