Abstract
This paper is a case study of one of Manila’s forgotten late 19th century cemeteries built by a Franciscan friar as a personal and pastoral response to the tragic memory of the suffering experienced by the Sampaloc residents during the 1882 cholera epidemic. It will examine the fragmented story of the birth, growth, and the prolonged death of Cementerio Balicbalic within the context of the late Spanish and early American periods.
