Abstract
A number of studies on tapping waves as a potential source of renewable energy have been undertaken by other countries as a technological means to support their increasing energy requirement triggered by population growth, urbanization, economic advancement and other energy-demand developments. This paper presents successful case studies in identifying and characterizing wave energy resource potential. The reviews serve as preliminary information particularly to government and private agencies tasked to find sources of renewable and alternative energy aside from the conventional means which proved to be environmentally effective, efficient and sustainable. In addressing the need for the promotion of technological innovation and clean energy, developing countries like the Philippines may learn from developed countries in the US, Europe, Japan specifically in their design and implementation of plans, programs and projects related to renewable energy development. Considering that the stage of development of wave energy systems in the Philippines is still at the technical concepts and laboratory studies scale, continuous research on this area need to be strengthened to realize the goals and objectives of sustainable energy systems. Furthermore, multidisciplinary and collaborative undertakings through cooperation of different stakeholders from the government and private sectors and through industry-academe linkages are essential and highly recommended to support the success of renewable energy studies.
