Abstract
A windows-based qualitative and quantitative superstructure rating system for RCDG bridges is developed. The software developed consists of three major modules: bridge inventory and data module, qualitative and quantitative module and the on-line help module. To demonstrate the developed computer software, an actual inspection and observation of a RC bridge was conducted. The evaluated of Lawa Bridge using the developed software shows that the span is capable of sustaining the loads in that area. The MS18 and M15 maximum truck loads that the span can sustain are equal to 484 kN and 269 kN respectively. The study therefore improves the basis on the present rating system procedure that relies much on inspector's experience, judgment and intuition. This is achieved by using a weighted-average method and an importance factor for different deterioration rates. Some of the important results of the study are the following; a uniform procedure is achieved, increased frequency and efficiency in rating bridges, the cost of evaluating bridges is minimized and an easy access to updated and objective information on any bridge.
