Abstract
This paper gives a profile of the English-language media in the Philippines amidst the growing popularity of Filipino, the national language, as the language of wider communication. The development of the English-language media is set against the backdrop of events that have shaped Philippine history from the period prior to the outbreak of World War II to the present day. The paper concludes with a brief survey of linguistic studies of the Philippine media and directions for future research. © 2004 Wiley. All rights reserved.
