Abstract

In the 50's and 60's when the traditional method of teaching was predominantly used in schools, the focus of instruction was on the subject matter. However, the influx of research in the field of education saw a major shift from the subject-centered education to the learner-centered education. Empowering learners, as reflected in several studies, requires better and improved instruction to develop in every learner the ability to plan, monitor and evaluate his own learning which reading scholars consider as metacognition.
