Abstract
This article discusses several metacognitive strategies and their importance in the teaching of comprehension in English language classrooms. Strategies for text comprehension are located in three phases of the lesson; planning, monitoring and evaluation (Miguel, 1996). In the planning phase strategies such as brainstorming, making visual representations, making semantic/cognitive maps, skimming and scanning through are discussed. In the monitoring phase, comprehension monitoring and production monitoring are given focus. Finally, in the evaluation phase, self-evaluation strategies are identified.
