Abstract
While the transition to digital television is currently happening in most countries around the world, there has been an increasing interest recently in enhancing the spectrum use efficiency especially in TV bands via cognitive radio based access where the bandwidth is reused on a non-interfering basis. In this study, we evaluate the theoretical capacity performance of a leaky coaxial cable (LCX) for a cognitive radio based system coexisting with TV transmission in VHF and lower part of UHF channels. Based on measured data, the channel capacity was first computed by suboptimal constant power allocation. Then, water filling technique was used to compensate for the variations in the channel and interference caused by the TV signal in these bands. Finally, the capacity was evaluated within the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) constraint of analog (50dB) and digital television (20dB) receiver threshold.
