Abstract
Higher-load gray water (HLGW) consists of kitchen-sink and washing machine discharges. This type of wastewater needs to be treated before ultimately discharging this to bodies of water. Treatment technologies should be at least secondary treatment technology, i.e., involving biological treatment processes, in order to treat organic matter in the wastewater. Membrane bioreactor is a promising technology that can be used to treat HLGW. This technology requires small footprint and could produce an effluent that is of high quality that may be suitable for recycling. Membrane bioreactor was used to treat HLGW, i.e., kitchen-sink wastewater only and a mixture of kitchen-sink and washing machine wastewaters. The permeate of the system (ultrafilter hollow-fiber submerged MBR) treating the mixture has a higher chemical oxygen demand (COD) compared to that of kitchen-sink wastewater only. In both cases, the % COD removal is >90.7%. Furthermore, >99% of the linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LAS) was removed. © Springer Japan KK, part of Springer Nature 2019. All rights reserved.
