Abstract
As teachers, we must aim for our students to achieve deep learning. However, students typically decide how they should perform depending on what is expected of them by the teacher. Perhaps, the major influence on the student's approach to learning is the assessment methods. This paper explores blogging as a form of assessment that would enable deeper learning in students. It is argued that the way a teacher designs a blog assignment can influence how students perform on the assignment. Varying blog assignments were implemented on two sets of undergraduate students for a period of one trimester through the Ning social network. This paper presents an analysis of how varying blog assignment designs influenced student participation, content, and writing style
