Abstract

This paper reports how Flickr Groups was used as a mindtool to enhance the photo-selection and evaluation skills of student groups enrolled in a digital media course. Specifically, Flickr Groups was tested to determine to what extent it would influence students’ judgment on selecting and evaluating photos using standard evaluation rubric criteria.

For the course of the experiment, the 40 students were divided into 10 student groups. Each student group was tasked to do the following: (a) conduct a photo shoot to capture 60 photos; (b) evaluate each photo with the digital photo evaluation rubric provided by the teacher; and (c) select five photos from the set of 60 photos. The 10 student groups were split into two conditions: 5 of the groups were told to use Flickr Groups as an additional evaluation tool aside from the evaluation rubric provided by the teacher; while the other 5 groups were not told to sue any additional tools.

Results from the experiment indicate Flickr Groups did not influence the photo-selection among any of the student groups. Furthermore, it was found that student groups that used both Flickr Groups and the rubric to evaluate photos had a stronger agreement or correlation between the teacher’s selection of photos and the student rubric scores compared to the student that only used the rubric to evaluate photos.
