Abstract

The dichloromethane extract of the air-dried leaves of Macaranga tanarius afforded chlorophyllide a (1), chlorophyll a (2), and polyprenol (3). The structures of 1 and 2 were elucidated by extensive 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy, while the structure of 3 was deduced by comparison of its 1H NMR data with those reported in the literature. Antimicrobial tests on 1 indicated that it has low antimicrobial activities against the bacteria: E. coli, S. aureus, and P. aeruginosa and fungi: C. albicans and T. mentagrophytes. It was inactive against B. subtilis and A. niger. Compound 2 was found to exhibit low antimicrobial activities against P. aeruginosa and C. albicans and inactive against E. coli, S. aureus, B. subtilis, A. niger, and T. mentagrophytes.
