Abstract

The Philippine component of the International Corpus of English has been completed, and is now available in two CD-ROMs. This paper presents an overview of the Philippine component, one of 20 country or regional corpora under the ICE. It discusses the method of data collection and markup, and some problems encountered in the process. It briefly describes the various text types in the spoken and written corpus. The paper details possible uses of the corpus for linguistic description and language pedagogy and it also mentions some limitations of the data. It is hoped that the availability of the Philippine corpus will encourage researchers of Asian Englishes to use Philippine data in their comparative studies of the new varieties of English. © 2004 ALC Press, Inc.
