Abstract

This study analyzed students’ lived experiences of “Live, Jesus, in our Hearts, Forever!” the third part of the Lasallian prayer, as it is known and practiced in the Philippines. The Brothers of the Christian Schools, the Institute founded by Saint John Baptist de La Salle, would rise with the invocation “Live, Jesus, in our hearts,” to which the rest of the Brothers present would answer “Forever!” The invocation started as a way for the De La Salle Brothers to greet each other at the beginning of the day. This invocation permeated beyond their living quarters and was adopted by the broader school community. In modern times, Lasallians use this invocation to conclude their prayers. The invocation serves as a reminder of the divine presence in every person and as a call to emulate the actions of Jesus in their lives (Enriquez, 2023). This study explored “Live, Jesus, in our hearts” and how students understand and live it. The researchers obtained data by conducting individual interviews with 15 Grade 12 students purposely selected from various strands of the Senior High School of De La Salle University, Manila, Philippines, during the first term of the academic year 2023-2024. Data analysis followed interpretive phenomenological analysis methodology to understand the essence of students’ experiences. Findings revealed that students manifest their understanding of the invocation through service, faith practices, virtuous living, and aligning actions with Christian teachings. The findings of this paper may be helpful to Christian Living teachers, curriculum developers, and administrators. The data may be a valuable resource in efforts to improve the instruction and the inculcation of the Lasallian prayer and spirituality into the school culture. Future research can be done on educators’ understanding of “Live Jesus in our hearts” and the whole Lasallian Prayer. The future research may be instrumental in assessing the curriculum, the connection between the students’ understanding and the educators’ understanding, its commonalities, and areas for improvement.
