Abstract

Acetone-toluene-water is a spent solvent mixture that is heavily generated by semiconductor industries. Acetone and toluene are not only harmful and dangerous for human health and environment but are also costly. Thus, their efficient recovery will significantly contribute to worldwide sustainable development efforts. A promising technology to recover these solvents more efficiently is distilling the mixture with salt as an additive to lower the boiling point of the mixture. A previous study using traditional experimentation procedure involving isopropyl alcohol-toluene water ternary mixture was encouraging since presence of salt lowered the temperature at certain mass fractions of alcohol, toluene and water. This study uses multivariate design of experiment to prove that distillation with salt as additive is an efficient recovery technology for acetone-toluene-water mixture depending on the mass fractions of the compounds and the amount of salt concentration.
