Abstract

During the seventeenth century, John Baptist de La Salle introduced in France a new and different type of primary school to meet the needs of the many poor boys who up till then had been deprived of educational opportunities. These institutions were also designed to serve both state and Church by training future citizens who could find useful employment as well as Christians who knew and practiced their religion.
