Abstract
Pope Francis calls for "Integral Ecology" which considers the care of and concern for the many dimensions of human and social life that affect the environmental and global conditions of mother earth. Part of this ecological responsibility is the awareness of the importance of historic, artistic and cultural patrimony of a particular group of people. The research focuses on the Sambali Festival, Cagayan Valley, Philippines. lt narrates the history and story of faith of the ltawes and lbanag people in relation to their devotion to the Lady of Piat, the brown image of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The study uses an auto-ethnographic approach and Focus Group Discussion (FGD) with the farmers to elaborate on the particular features of the festival and their correlation to the actual and present social-environmental concerns of the community. It offers theological reflections on the festival as a communal and joyful celebration of Christian faith which challenges the devotees of the Lady of Piat towards environmental advocacy. The paper contributes to further pastoral reflection and a concrete plan of action for the communities celebrating festivals.
