Abstract

Previous studies have emphasized the importance of the husband’s support during pregnancy. However, there is dearth in literature looking into the multifaceted nature of the assistance that expectant fathers can provide their wives, as well as assessment tools to gauge their involvement in prenatal care. This study attempted to identify the dimensions of the husband’s involvement in the prenatal care of primigravid mothers using qualitative inquiry which can be a basis for a proposed survey tool for Filipino men. The researchers conducted focused group discussions with couples, interviews with husbands, and consultation with an expert in Valenzuela City to describe these dimensions through thematic reflection. Seven dimensions of a husband’s involvement in pregnancy emerged in the study: (1) behavioral; (2) caring; (3) financial; (4) inquiry; (5) physical; (6) big day!; and (7) spiritual involvement. From this, dimension indicators for a survey tool were identified. The researchers recommend an increased participation of husbands during pregnancy, as urged by health professionals, health educators and other stakeholders.
