Abstract
This study examines how different levels of participant motivation covary with physical activity involvement and psychological outcomes. The Godin Leisure-Time Exercise Questionnaire, Motives for Physical Activity Measure - Revised, Perceived Stress Scale, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale and Positive and Negative Affect Schedule were administered to 600 Filipinos aged 18 to 40. Cluster analysis revealed four clusters. The ideal cluster (n=141) showed high levels of physical activity involvement, high overall motivations, the least stress, the highest self-esteem and a strong preponderance of positive affect over negative affect. Another cluster (n=135) was characterized by hight involvement, the highest social and appearance motivations and less robust psychological outcomes. The third (n=199) was characterized by low levels of involvement with high social and appearance motivation and the fourth (n=125) by the lowest involvement and overall motivation. Results suggest that competence, interest/enjoyment and fitness motivations be emphasized in promoting physical activity involvement and positive psychological outcomes.
