Abstract
Higher education institutions are increasingly mandated to implement education for sustainable development(ESD)to save this planet and its people amidst the threats of climate change, wars, and health crises. In the Philippines, ESD is an urgent need because it is the most disaster-prone in the world. The combination of service learning (SL)and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) has been getting recent attention because of its power to transform the curriculum and consequently transform students. However, in the Philippines, ESD and SL are still in the developing stage. This paper will address this knowledge gap by presenting a case study of ESD+ E (extreme)-SL to show the sustainability of this approach despite the Covid-19 pandemic. A case study approach was used to map the alignment of Purposive Communication with sustainable competencies, sustainable pedagogy, and assessment, as well as to analyze the perception of faculty and students about the relevance and practicality of E-SL. The results show that Purposive Communication meets five of the eight sustainable competencies, while some teaching and assessment practices are closely aligned with the ESD framework. The students and faculty agree that E-SL drives engagement and deepens student learning. This study argues that E-SL is a practical means to implement ESD, develop sustainable competencies, and consequently mobilize students to act to ensure a sustainable future.
