Abstract

There’s a province in the Philippines located in Region IV-A named Batangas that seems to be practicing and preserving a weird value system that is called culture of yabang or yabangan. It is so, for the term yabang which is equivalent in English language as arrogance or self-pride has been considered by the locals of Batangas who are known as Batangueños as a unique and positive trait that is worth to be passed on to their offsprings and succeeding generation.

This will be the quest of inquiry and examination of this paper; to figure out how a commonly known negative Filipino term yabang has a corresponding positive meaning in the Batangueño culture, not just as a value system, but primarily as a love language. This will be done with the aid of phenomenological epoche/ bracketing, a method that aims to suspend judgement in order to prevent impulsive and unfounded conclusions that will hinder one from uprooting the rich and authentic meaning of the said value system for the true-blooded Batangueños.
