Abstract

Owing to the growing awareness of the toxicity of heavy metals, searching for effective analytical methods has been the subject of current analytical research. In view of their toxicity, the determination of heavy metals such as Hg, Zn, Ni, Pb and Cd becomes crucial. Ion Selective Electrodes offer several advantages in this type of analysis. The most attractive features of this technique are the speed, portability, sample non-destruction, online monitoring, cost-effectiveness and large measuring range. Porphyrins are naturally occurring compounds which bind selectively to metal ions and are being used to develop sensors for different cations. In line with this, different porphyrin-based sensors have been improvised to determine the concentration of heavy metals in selected samples. Efficiency of the sensor is measured based on the response time, useful pH range, lifetime, stability and reproducibility.
