Abstract

The role of the English language in our country is changing. The profile of the DLSU student has also changed. These changes demand innovations int he English language curriculum and in the teaching strategies used. To meet this need head on, the Englbas Project was launched by the Languages Department of the DLSU.
A task force was created to propose plans, anticipate questions, revise standard procedures, and recommend possible solutions. To accomplish all these, several committees were formed. The project was implemented at the start of the 1990-01 schoolyear with six faculty members teaching two-hour lecture, three-hour lab session classes to students of the College of Engineering.
Findings from the taped interviews of both the faculty members and the students involved show that one-on-one contact between teachers and students during lab sessions maximize the acquisition of both writing and reading skills.
