Abstract

Purpose – This study examines the scholarly contributions of Filipino librarians in the field of library and information science (LIS) and the impact of their work by analyzing the citing documents of the top 10 most cited publications. Design/methodology/approach – This study uses citation analysis to measure research impact based on citation count and the influence of the citing documents. It also employs citation context analysis to determine the intent behind the citation. Elsevier’s Scopus database was used to harvest the research publications on LIS in the Philippines by librarians (practitioners and educators) from 1980- 2022. The number of citations and the bibliographic details of citing documents was retrieved from Scopus and Google Scholar. Findings – Results indicate that Philippine LIS authors produced 114 documents from 1980 to July 2022, the majority of which, 82 or 71.9%, are articles, 20 or 17.5% are conference papers, 8 or 7% are book chapters, 3 or 2.6% are reviews, and 1 0r 0.9%, conference review. The number of research output is highest in the last 5 years (2018-2022) which constitutes more than 60% of the total output in four decades. Analysis of citing sources indicates that the majority of articles are published by Emerald (33.33%), Taylor and Francis (24.44%), and Elsevier (8.89%). Top citing countries/territories are the United States, Philippines, and India. Source titles in the field of LIS have an average CiteScore of 2.5 and most (57%) belong to the second quartile. The analysis of in-text citations revealed that most documents are located in the literature review section and in the introduction or in the background of the study part of the paper. Finally, it was found that the prevailing reason for citation is to provide background information about the topic (literature review) and to give credence to previous work. Practical implications – Results of the study provide an overview of the LIS research in the Philippines and offer information regarding research impact using both quantitative and qualitative measures. Originality/value – This study highlights the LIS research in the Philippines from 1980-2022.
