Abstract
Groundwater is generally an important water source in rural areas. The municipality of Santa Ignacia, Tarlac is highly dependent on groundwater as its major source of water for drinking, domestic, and irrigation purposes. Infections caused by protozoans were reported in 21 barangays of the municipality. Thus, the present study explored the presence of protozoans in groundwater as a probable source of infection. A total of 274 groundwater samples used for drinking and/or bathing was collected from 21 sampling sites in the study area from January to March 2019. Samples were analyzed for the presence of protozoans through modified calcium carbonate flocculation method followed by staining procedures: Lugol's iodine and cold-acid fast, prior to microscopy. Microscopic examination revealed the absence of protozoans in all groundwater samples; however, the presence of plant debris was found among water samples. In general, the absence of protozoans in the examined groundwater samples does not certainly imply that they do not exist in groundwater sources in the study area. It is recommended to conduct a similar study during the wet season and to use a more sensitive method for detection of protozoans in groundwater sources. The development of low cost-efficient technology for monitoring protozoans in water sources will be helpful. The community should be informed of the risks posed by consuming untreated groundwater. The construction of sturdy and versatile water infrastructures will ensure safe water source. The extensive groundwater reservoir in the Philippines can be conserved and protected through the creation, development, and execution of sustainable programs.
