Abstract
This paper shows that cheating in sports leagues are induced by the economic structure of sports leagues. It addresses the specific issue of point shaving of players in a basketball league. Through economic theory, a mathematical model is designed to illustrate the men's basketball league in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP), pinpoint league structures which create incentives for players to engage in point shaving. Further, it is found that point shaving could not me completely eradicated from the league. However, the league can impose certain rules that will minimize the occurrence of offering being done as well as the acceptance of players to the bribes offered them.
