Comments

Abstract:

From hollow reeds to inverted cauldrons and diving bells, humanity has found various means to explore and observe the underwater environment. Like any new tools, they were crude and obviously needed refinement. The efforts of Emille Gagnian and Jacques Cousteau in the mid -20th century led to the development of Aqualung, the predecessor of modern scuba diving equipment. It also led to a much broader understanding of the effects of the hyperbaric environment on human physiology. SCUBA diving in this age and time is considered very safe. The technology allowed the ordinary citizen to explore the aquatic world as a curious tourist as well as an inquisitive science researcher and much of our understanding of coral reefs and other aquatic organisms, their habitats, and other peculiarities we owe to scuba diving. SCUBA Diving has been incorporated into the academic curriculum of many academic institutions in recognition of its importance as an exploration tool. This webinar will explore the development of diving technologies and opportunities for budding scientists from various colleges in the field of aquatic sciences.
