Abstract (English)

The liturgical reform in the church is more than just an internal affair but rather shaped by movements such as that of decolonization. In 2001, the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments released the publication titled “Directory of Popular Piety and the Liturgy: Principles and Guidelines” (DPPL) to establish fundamental principles, restate certain mandates, and offer suggestions to enhance effective pastoral action in harmonizing popular piety and the liturgy. This thesis presents a comprehensive examination of the DPPL document to assess efforts at harmonizing popular piety and liturgy following Vatican II from a decolonizing-decoloniality perspective. While decolonization is concerned with “taking back the land,” meaning greater control over tangible elements of the liturgy, decoloniality or decolonialization is more about a radical inculturation that confronts the Roman Eurocentric framework of thinking about the liturgy to foster indigenous approaches to understanding, praying, and theologizing on worship. This study analyses the principles and guidelines of DPPL through the lens of decolonization-decoloniality, by focusing on “Three Keys”—historical, epistemological, and ecclesiological perspectives. The historical key examines to what extent processes of resistance and decolonization influenced the Directory. The epistemological key examines the principles and guidelines offered by DPPL and its underlying concept of the “popular,” culture, and inculturation. The ecclesiological key analyzes the underlying model of the church that informs the Directory, that is, a pilgrim church, and how it promotes the decolonization-decolonialization of liturgy. By employing this threefold approach, the research shows the DPPL is aligned with the decolonizing trajectory but falls short of decolonializing the liturgy.

Ang repormang liturhikal sa Simbahan ay hindi lamang isang panloob na usapin; ito ay hinuhubog din ng mas malawak na mga kilusan tulad ng dekolonisasyon. Noong 2001, inilathala ng Kongregasyon para sa Banal na Pagsamba at Disiplina ng mga Sakramento ang Directory of Popular Piety and the Liturgy: Principles and Guidelines (DPPL) upang ilatag ang mga pangunahing prinsipyo, muling igiit ang ilang mga mandato, at magbigay ng mga mungkahi para sa mas epektibong gawaing pastoral sa paghaharmonisa ng debosyon ng bayan at ng liturhiya. Inihaharap ng tesis na ito ang isang masusing pagsusuri sa dokumentong DPPL upang suriin ang mga pagsisikap nitong pag-isahin ang popular na debosyon at liturhiya alinsunod sa diwa ng Ikalawang Konsilyo ng Vaticano, gamit ang pananaw ng dekolonisasyon at dekolonyalidad.Habang ang dekolonisasyon ay pangunahing tumutukoy sa “pagbawi ng lupa,” na nangangahulugang mas malawak na kontrol sa mga kongkretong elemento ng liturhiya, ang dekolonyalidad o dekolonyalisasyon naman ay nakatuon sa mas radikal na inkulturasyon. Hinahamon nito ang Romanong euro-sentrikong balangkas ng pag-iisip tungkol sa liturhiya upang mapalaganap ang mga katutubong paraan ng pag-unawa, pananalangin, at pagbubuo ng teolohiya ng pagsamba. Sinusuri ng pag-aaral na ito ang mga prinsipyo at patnubay ng DPPL sa pamamagitan ng lente ng dekolonisasyon–dekolonyalidad, sa pagtutok sa “Tatlong Susi”: historikal, epistemolohikal, at eklesyolohikal na mga pananaw. Sinusuri ng historikal na susi kung hanggang saan nakaimpluwensiya ang mga proseso ng paglaban at dekolonisasyon sa pagbuo ng Directory. Tinatasa ng epistemolohikal na susi ang mga prinsipyong at patnubay na inaalok ng DPPL, gayundin ang nakapailalim nitong pag-unawa sa “popular,” kultura, at inkulturasyon. Sinusuri naman ng eklesyolohikal na susi ang modelong eklesyolohikal na pinagbabatayan ng Directory—ang Simbahang naglalakbay—at kung paano nito isinusulong ang dekolonisasyon at dekolonyalisasyon ng liturhiya. Sa pamamagitan ng tatluhang lapit na ito, ipinakikita ng pananaliksik na ang DPPL ay nakahanay sa landas ng dekolonisasyon, ngunit hindi ganap na nakaaabot sa tunay na dekolonyalisasyon ng liturhiya.
