Abstract/Summary

This study further explored the relationship between dispositional resilience and perceived stress among Filipino seafarers by examining the mediating role of coping strategies, specifically problem-focused and emotion-focused coping strategies. The 211 Filipino seafarers from Compass Training Center aged 25-50 responded to the three scales. The following scales used were 1) the Dispositional-Resilience Scale-15 to measure the dispositional resilience through the three related dispositional tendencies, namely commitment, control, and challenge; 2) the Perceived Stress Scale-10 to assess the degree to which a situation in an individual’s life is appraised as stressful; 3) Brief-COPE to determine the primary coping styles an individual has. The result showed that there is a negative relationship between dispositional resilience and perceived stress among seafarers. Also, dispositional resilience has positive relationship to problem-focused coping strategies, which in turn has a

negative relationship with perceived stress. Furthermore, dispositional resilience has a negative relationship to emotion-focused coping, which in turn has a positive relationship with perceived stress. Dispositional resilience plays a crucial role in reducing levels of perceived stress among seafarers through the utilization of effective coping strategies.
