Abstract (English)

This study investigated the moderating role of psychological hardiness on the relationship between burnout and psychological well-being among Filipino mental health practitioners, a workforce operating within a resource-constrained healthcare system. Employing a cross-sectional explanatory design, the research analyzed data from 102 licensed practitioners, including psychologists, guidance counselors, social workers, and psychiatrists, who completed the Maslach Burnout Inventory, the Dispositional Resilience Scale (HARDY), and the Psychological Well-Being Scale. Multiple regression analyses confirmed that emotional exhaustion and depersonalization significantly and negatively predicted psychological well-being, whereas personal accomplishment served as a significant positive predictor. However, contrary to the central hypothesis, hardiness did not function as a moderator between burnout components and well-being; instead, it emerged as a robust direct predictor of positive psychological functioning. Notably, the inclusion of hardiness in the regression model rendered the negative effect of depersonalization non-significant, suggesting a conceptual overlap where hardiness serves as a foundational personality resource that accounts for the variance previously attributed to detachment. The findings challenge the stress-buffering model within this context, supporting a main effect model where hardiness sustains well-being regardless of stress levels, and underscore the necessity for interventions that simultaneously address systemic exhaustion and cultivate individual resilience.
