Abstract/Summary

One of the causes why organizations are problematic, inefficient, and unproductive could be traced to the deficiency in their processes because it hinders them from reaching their fullest potential. It applies at all enterprise levels, from micro-businesses to large corporations. There are several reasons for it. These organizations could have neglected to face the problems, hesitated to take risks, or avoided to introduce changes within their system. In the case of ABC Garments, which is a family-owned business at the micro-enterprise level, the management didn’t have someone who would look into their problems, which led to the manifestations of its unproductive business operations.

In this insider action research project, the action researcher and his collaborators sought to address its organization’s main issue: the lack of proper operational practices. We used the PDCA Cycle and the 6S Approach from Lean Programs as guiding frameworks. With the help of various tools such as Methods of Inquiry, Three-Circle Model of the Family Business System, Cause-Effect Diagram, SMART Goal, RACI Matrix, and Lewin's Three-Step Change Model, we were able to achieve our desired outcomes collaboratively.

In the first cycle, we successfully revived the garments house back to its operational and functional condition. In the second cycle, we enforced a continuous practice within the process of the family business. And at the end, the action researcher was able to develop a framework called the House Model for Business Development Framework. The success indicators of this action research project were based on the outcomes; a beautified garments house, improved workflow, sustained process, motivated workers, and productive business operations.
