Abstract (English)
This thesis conceptualizes and practices Tidal Theater through the co-creation of an ecocritical performance with Teatro ni Juan, a community theater group based in Marikina City. Responding to Marikina’s recurring flooding, ecological vulnerability, and community-based cultural production, it examines how theater-making is shaped by ecological precarity, communal labor, and more-than-human collaboration through Kamau Brathwaite’s tidalectics, Rosi Braidotti’s posthumanism, ecocritical performance, Philippine performance studies, community theater practice, Jazmin Llana’s tilted thinking, and Anril Tiatco’s framework of panata, pagtitipon, and pagdiriwang. Using creative-critical practice-as-research, supported by reflexive practitioner inquiry and archival, dramaturgical, and performance analysis, the study examines selected Teatro ni Juan works as precedent cases and documents the co-creation of Hapeelan, Wasak, and Karbon. The findings identify tidal qualities in TNJ’s works through political immersion, temporary gathering, material ecology, audience proximity, and resurfacing local memory, while the co-creation process reveals how performance-making moves through interruption, ethical hesitation, rehearsal difficulty, AI-assisted prompting, ecological imagination, and documented performance conditions. The study proposes four tidal currents as the conceptual and creative structure of Tidal Theater: Paghinga as pause and listening; Pagtitipon as gathering; Paglunod as engagement with crisis and uncertainty; and Pag-ahon as resurfacing, revision, and renewed relation. Beyond flood or disaster imagery, Tidal Theater names a community-based, ecocritical, posthuman, and creative-critical practice through which theater responds to crisis through memory, shared labor, embodied practice, and creative survival.
