Abstract/Summary

The chain of causation in global production networks move both ways: flows transform spaces and spaces transform flows. Today, realizing that what you make matters, countries in East Asia are searching for ways to cope with the new opportunities and challenges presented by a radically transformed regional economy in electronics trade. Consistent with a global production networks approach, this study argues that within a radically transformed East Asia, Japan sustained competitiveness by: 1) specializing in commodities that yield dynamic benefits; 2) capitalizing on comparative advantages of its neighbors for optimal production; and 3) pushing for further trade liberalization in the region.
