Abstract (English)
This study investigated the utilization of sugarcane bagasse fibers as a component material for concrete hollow blocks (CHBs), aiming to enhance compressive strength and promote sustainable construction practices. Tests of 80 randomly sampled and locally available CHBs within Metro Manila unfortunately did not meet the compressive strength requirement of DPWH. To address this, sugarcane bagasse fibers were incorporated into CHBs at varying amounts and thicknesses. Results demonstrated that the addition of these fibers initially increased compressive strength. However, fiber content at 3% by weight of cement led to a decrease in strength, primarily attributed to fiber clumping and increased void content. The study further revealed that fiber thickness significantly influenced performance, with fibers between 1.18 mm and 2.36 mm showing the most promising results, achieving optimal strength at 2% fiber content with an increase of 26.5% compared to the control samples. Furthermore, incorporating sugarcane bagasse fibers resulted in decreased density and increased absorption of the CHBs, shifting their classification from normal to medium weight due to increased porosity. A cost analysis confirmed that the most cost-effective and structurally improved design mix was identified as CHBs containing 2% sugarcane bagasse fibers with a thickness between 1.18 mm and 2.36 mm, offering a viable solution for producing compliant and sustainable building materials.
