Abstract (English)
Bamboo is a renewable natural resource characterized by its lightweight nature, high strength, and stiffness, thereby promoting its potential as one of the optimal construction materials in structural designs. Q-connection is commonly observed in bamboo structural designs, where the inherent weakness of splitting under pressure needs to be addressed. This study aims to provide statistical data and technical insights into the development of bamboo engineering standards. The study determined the impact of various modifications—mortar infill, bolt diameter, dowel location, and steel clamps—on the strength performance of transversely loaded Bambusa blumeana dowelled connections. Bearing load test results indicated that mortar-filled bamboo internodes exhibit greater load capacity compared to hollow specimens. A shorter dowel-to-node distance and the use of steel hose clamps can greatly improve the stress-resistivity of transversely loaded dowelled connections. Characteristic ultimate and yield strength values of Q-connection were determined following ISO 12122 guidelines. Modified configuration type with 16 mm dowel at center, 9 MPa mortar infill, and hose clamps, was found to be the optimal reinforcement combination for increasing the ultimate strength and yield strength by 119% and 184%, respectively. The predominant failure mode of Q-connections was found in splitting. ANOVA results indicated the significant improvement of modified configurations on the characteristic strength values of Q-connections. Multiple linear regression (MLR) models were developed to predict the characteristic strength values of Bambusa blumeana dowel connections under transverse loading. These research outcomes may provide data references and design convenience for the bamboo engineering field.
