Abstract (English)

Residential buildings are one of the most common types of construction here in the Philippines. Around 71.8% of the total number of constructions are attributed to residential buildings. Because of this, structural engineers usually consider three things during construction namely: serviceability, economy, and safety. However, it is also important to consider the sustainability and environmental effects of the construction of houses. This involves the assessment of both structural and non-structural elements of the residential building. This research focuses on the use of Structural Sustainability Index (SSI) and Environmental Comfort Index (EnviCom Index), single-score ratings based on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Environmental Comfort Assessment. Various indicators were used to quantify the environmental impacts. The weights of these indicators were obtained through surveying civil engineering related professions. 6 houses were then compared in the LCA case study, while 5 houses were compared in EnviCom case study. For LCA, reinforcement ratios were used, and it was related to the SSI scores to establish a relationship between structural design and sustainability. It was found that the Baseline House – OvD had the highest SSI of 1 while House A had the lowest SSI of 0.51. It was found that as the reinforcement ratio increases so as the SSI score. For EnviCom, the Baseline house had the highest EnviCom Index of 0.94 while lowest was the House A – Fiberglass having a EnviCom Index of 0.23. The high score of baseline house is due to the properties of reinforced concrete and steel which was primarily used for the house. To lower these scores, it was proposed that a house design using RC for structural elements and fiberglass or wood for non-structural elements to be used. Additionally, a framework program for both LCA and EnviCom Assessment was created to be available for anyone to use. This program was designed to follow the case study in the research. This program could be used by civil engineers to consider sustainability in their house designs.
