Abstract/Summary

The design of buildings is an evolving concept in civil engineering. The design would be subjected to scrutinized investigation to ensure the safety and integrity of the structure. The study involves High Rise buildings with re – entrant corners. The study undergoes the structural analysis of high-rise buildings in terms of different cases such as serviceability requirements in accordance with the acceptance criteria under Performance Based Design Analysis. Investigation of this magnitude should have an output that can justify that the building with a Re – Entrant Corner will behave in the expected modal behaviour and it can run without any errors in Extended 3D Analysis of Building Systems (ETABS). From the analysis of the high – rise building used in this scheme, the torsional irregularity of the building will be evaluated to prove that there is no need to amplify the forces given that the values acquired from the software are within the allowable limits of the Acceptance Criteria under Tall Buildings Initiative (TBI) and in the Torsional Irregularity Evaluation from Los Angeles Tall Buildings Structural Design Council (LATBSDC). The evaluation was done through numerous iterations with the use of the software. After the iterations were done in the software, the results in the Torsional Irregularity show a maximum value of 1.27 versus the allowable limit of 1.5. Upon checking the transient drifts displacements in the re-entrant building, the results show 0.166% actual drift displacement with a limit of 0.4% for the Wind Serviceability Model, 0.33% actual drift displacement with a limit of 0.5% for the Service Level Earthquake Model (SLE) and 2.77% actual drift displacement with a limit of 3% for the Maximum Considered Earthquake Model. After extensive iterations, the values obtained from the software show that they are within acceptable limits stated in the criteria and thus concludes that the Re – Entrant building has Torsional Irregularity but not up to the point that there is a need to magnify the forces in each floor given the said irregularity.
