Abstract (English)

Burnout among teachers is a growing concern, particularly in the Philippines where educators face demanding workloads, ancillary roles, and cultural expectations of moral integrity and resilience. Grounded in Social Mentalities Theory (SMT), this study reconceptualizes burnout as an imbalance of affect regulation system with threat and drive systems dominating while the soothing system is under activated. Within this framework, self-compassion reflects the activation of the soothing system, while self-coldness reflects the overactivation of the threat and drive systems.

This study adopts a two-study design. Study 1 employs a quantitative survey of Filipino teachers to examine the prevalence of burnout, the predictive role of personal and contextual factors, and the moderating effects of self-compassion and self-coldness on the relationship between burnout and mental health outcomes such as depression, anxiety, and stress.

Moderation analyses reveal that self-compassion buffers the effects of burnout on anxiety and stress, while self-coldness consistently amplifies its negative impact. Study 2 uses qualitative interviews with teachers identified as highly burnt out from Study 1 to contextualize these findings. Thematic analysis highlights teachers lived experiences of burnout, their coping processes, and how self- relating influences their well-being.

Findings suggest that burnout in Filipino teachers is both a systemic and internalized psychological condition, intensified by workload, organizational pressures, and family demands, but shaped by self-relating processes. The results underscore the protective role of self- compassion, the exacerbating role of self-coldness, and the importance of interventions that strengthen teachers’ soothing system regulation while reducing thoughts and behaviors that stimulates the threat and drive systems into dominance.
