Abstract (English)

This study aims to develop a capabilities-based version of tolerance that resolves three conceptual problems associated with its exercise: the paradox of the tolerant racist, the paradox of drawing the limits, and the problem of relational dynamics. To support its central thesis, it presents the following arguments: First, the present study argues that the traditional and contemporary theories of tolerance that were derived from liberalism and liberal values have not resolved those problems because of these theories' implicit reliance on the disengaged self. This warrants a new formulation of tolerance that draws on a normative framework that does not rely on the same conception of the self. Second, the capabilities-based approach can be used as an alternative normative framework for tolerance even if its originators—Amartya Sen and Martha Nussbaum—have produced different versions of the theory, considering that both versions are compatible and complementary. Lastly, drawing on both Sen's and Nussbaum's interpretations of the capabilities approach, the present study argues that an interpretation of tolerance that entails conditions based on Sen's notion of public reasoning and Nussbaum’s ten central capabilities resolves the three conceptual problems. It does this by (i) formulating a theory of tolerance that is not based on the disengaged self; (ii) specifying conditions that restrict persons from justifying their actions with racially motivated reasons, and that set non-arbitrary standards for what is tolerable and intolerable; (iii) preventing a kind of tolerance that gives undue preference to one individual or group over other members of society.

Layunin ng pag-aaral na ito na bumuo ng isang bersyon ng tolerance (pagpapaubaya) na nakabatay sa kakayahan (capabilities), na lumulutas sa tatlong konseptwal na suliraning kaugnay ng pagsasagawa nito: ang paradox of the tolerant racist, ang paradox of drawing the limits, at ang problem of relational dynamics. Upang suportahan ang pangunahing tesis nito, inilalahad ng pag-aaral ang mga sumusunod na argumento: Una, iginigiit ng kasalukuyang pag-aaral na hindi nalutas ng tradisyonal at kontemporaryong mga teorya ng tolerance—na hinango sa liberalismo at mga pagpapahalagang liberal—ang mga suliraning ito dahil sa implisitong pagsandig ng mga teoryang ito sa disengaged self. Nangangailangan ito ng bagong pormulasyon ng tolerance na kukuha sa isang normatibong balangkas na hindi umaasa sa gayunding konsepsiyon ng sarili.
